The piece was a sound piece with instruments, a video, and movements. The act had five performers and it started with one of them in a pile of shredded paper doing weird gestures. The next thing that really started the performance when one of the performer with shredded paper walked into a small room with the audience and started to make inhuman noises. Soon two more performers joined in and made tons of different sounds including bird noises, breathing noises, and tongue clicking sounds, etc. Soon one performer left and played the bass and it was just two moving performers throughout the art piece. The video was about people that were blind how hard their lives were. I thought the play had something to do with people that were blind and echolocation. There was also an art piece in the room that was half of a hexagon shape with five objects in the shape of a human head. The performance lasted about 90 minutes and my favorite part was when all the actors stopped making noises and calmed down, when the show ended it reminded me of a horror movie because horror movies "never" end happily.

Francesca Woodman

Hi I'm Dane writing about Francesca Woodman and what I got from her artwork. When I look at the black and white photos it automaticly gives me a mysterious feeling. It makes want to know more about what the person in the picture is feeling and what they want me to see. Also what they are hiding. Overall, when I look at her work I can tell that she knew what she was doing and that she had a message to tell. In this photo it shows a woman kind of creeping and shocked, maybe she's shocked for what she is seeing or that she got cuaght creeping. It could be a lot of things that come to mind but it's what come to yours.

First Responses

Image from Prajakti Jayavant's current show at Meridian Gallery.

1.

Chocolate Brown, Oxblood Brown, Raisin

2.

Paperrock metaphors crumble

present circle pillow fitness brown chocolate ball

hard black brain

boat darkside a dime a bear poison

-Sadat Collins

3.

elephant, first base, heart, whale, envelope, car crash, folded worn clothes, stitches, flesh, flower, litter

Are Tattos Art?

I think most tattoos are art. So today, Matthew & Rye decided to split us up into a group of 4 & we had to bring other groups to a place that our group decided to go within 6 blocks. Then when we reached the place, we had to draw something we saw there in 5 minutes. I had fun because my group brought other groups to a place that sold fishballs! YUM! It was also tiring because we had to walk up a hill! After that we came back to the Meridian, had a snack, played a game called category & drew a picture we wanted on the printing block. Overall, it was a great day & I hope we do this more often.

Written by: Turtle K.L.

Next to Sushi, Near Walgreens, Cable Car Road.

Have you ever thought about how you know your way to your destination? Many of us use nearby stores, road signs, and maps. But do maps really show us everything?

Guy Debord has invented this thing called Psychogeography, which is the study of the way people think geographically. He made these maps (as shown on the right) using his own perspective.

Today, we tried to do something similar, and made the route that we take from one place(i.e. home) to our destination(i.e. Meridian Gallery). Our maps were made more mentally than geographically. As we put our routes on paper, we thought about what we saw, heard, and smelled when we went through the route. Exquisite corpse means (also known as exquisite cadaver or rotating corpse) is a method be which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule (e.g. " the adjective noun adverb verb the adjective noun") or by being allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed. It is all about the imagination on our afterlife and how can we have after life. The almighty god of Egypt that created human beings, the beautiful world, all the living things and non living things in the world is Khnum, he is also created Ka and Ba, who are the soul and spirit of a human. Ka is a human’s double. It appears when a human approaches the death and also help people living and eating at the after live. Ba Is the spirit of a human, it has a bird’s lower body and a human face. It can fly out side the tomb and looking around the world when the human dead. Anubis is the most important god in Ancient Egypt. Anubis is a jackal-head god of mummification. Once finished mummification finished, the dead can keep Ka and Ba. The dead god is Orisis, who was a princess was killed by an evil empire, and amputated into pieces, but his sister got all his limbs back and restored him, he reincarnated and became the first dead god, control the death. Every king want to join in Osiris, but just mummification isn’t enough, they have to pass the test, their heart have to be lighter than a piece of feather, if their heart is lighter than a feather, which means they have no sin, if not, they would be killed by a devourer, an ugly monster, everybody would like to believe they would join Osiris, but for now, we all know, it is just myth.

    - 欧阳晨星 chenxingouyang ALex

Song Dong's Waste Not

Waste Not by Song Dong is a very interesting exhibition. Dong's piece includes about 10,000 items, including pots, shoes, clothes, cans, bottles, televisions, a shelter and even a bed. He mostly used household items that are used for cooking and other items people use every day. What was very interesting about Waste Not is the position Dong puts the items in. He gathered all of household items by their kind. For example, a corner of the room was filled with pots and other part of the room was filled with empty cans and bottles. All the things were placed very neatly together and organized. I believe the artist is trying to show the viewers that we are very materialistic and that we shouldn't be. We should use less things and stop making more waste.

Bunny

It is a cute child wearing rabbit clothes and sitting under a mushroom.....

By: Alice San

Organs of Appetite #3

This painting is a wall of bricks. Random? I know.
Currently we have a project in progress and it's on stop motion.
The Panda is one of our main characters. We used a Tyvex suit as a prop for the Panda.
The Tyvex suit is all white, so we decided to paint it. When we got to the tail, we had a debate on "What color is the Panda's tail?" Some said "It's white!", and others said "It's Black!"
Since we had different opinions, we decided to research online. The result online is relevant to our answers. So, we decided to have a white panda tail at the end. We believe that some Panda's have black tail and some have white tail. It's just like us, human, we all have a unique characteristic and appearance. So, what do you think? Is the Panda's tail black or white?

Jun Xue on Friday 2/18/11

COMBO a collaborative animation by Blu and David Ellis

Is about art painting on a car or wall. People painting it then they take a picture of it. Nice art painting and colors on a big wall. People painting colors on the ground matching it and camera shots. Making a hole on a wall to make art painting. People painting and making pictures on the wall trying to make it move on a camera. Long camera shots of painting. It also look like the pictures are walking on the walls. It looks like animation and it took a long time to paint. The art paintings are moving around the wall one by one and it is amazing to move the paintings on the wall with the camera shots. The painters drew pictures that matches with each other when the drawing moves it looks like its flying. It looks like cartoon drawings cause the way it looks and move. Will you think this cup of water is half full or half empty? Personally, I think it's neither half full or half empty. I'm saying this because I believe everyone has their own view toward things in this world. It is believed that being Optimistic(meaning if you think this cup is half full) means you are being open minded toward life. On the other hand, if you believe it's Pessimistic(meaning if you think this cup is half empty), it means that you think life is sad. Therefore, a philosophical question is developed. "Is the glass half empty or half full?" Do you believe this philosophy? Or how do you think about it?

I think this philosophical question is the most marvelous philosophical statement out of all the others. It is similar to "Did the egg or the Chicken come first?" Do you agree?

Can you think of any other statements? I think all these statements will never have a correct answer to it because everyone has their own point of views and opinions. How does it make you feel? Why does it make you feel this way? This painting is called, "Awakenings" by Samm Cohen. When i first came upon this painting I was very confused as to why it was called , "Awakenings." In my opinion the thought of an awakening is very hopeful and optimistic, but when I look at this painting all I see is despair and depression. It's very funny how controversial a painting can really be. Cohen's use of backround in this picture makes you create the content of the painting on your own. The figure can be sitting in a corner or a closet hiding from an enemy, as well as sitting along side a riverbank loosing all hope. The figures body language leads me to believe that it is vulnerable. Either way, an awakening is the last thing that comes to mind. Another controversial issue with this painting is whether or not the figure is male or female. The shape of the body and the way the knees are covering the chest lead me to believe it was a female, but the gender of the figure is not clearly stated. One of the very first questions that pop into my mind is, what inspired Cohen to paint something that represents such sorrow...or in his opinion hope. The only person who can really know what this painting represents is Samm Cohen himself. No one can fully understand the complexity of another individuals mind. I guess that is what makes art so interesting!

Article Written By: Chelsea Davis

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 208px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xbyxgOUTjRg/TT9_pPxUBuI/AAAAAAAAAHg/eRD_dLeVF2w/s400/sfballettitle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566308011037951714" />
I don't know if it's just me, but i have been noticing ballet costumes (totos or whatever you want to call them) all over Union Square in the store windows. They are beautiful to look at, and it seems like I notice a new one on a mannequin almost everyday!! Apparently, these window displays are advertising the San Francisco Ballet opening night. I think this is such a good idea, I have always thought ballerinas were so beautiful. I wish i could be one. I wish I could dance like that, so perfectly. It always has seemed like the perfect, most elegant life to me. But now I am not so sure after seeing the movie Black Swan. Natalie Portman's character Nina strives to be perfect (until she literally goes insane..) She forgets what it is like to lose herself in her dance. I think art can be like that too. Sometimes you cant think about it too much, you just have too lose your self in it, and who cares if it is not perfect??
Thanks for reading
--MAEVE FITZHOWARD

multi-meaning

Hello my names Quincy Collins and the photo you see i will blog about this This is a photo i like i wanted to blog about because it has a meaning to me.
To me this is a person with no personality,no identity yet he's looking. Also the face in here is symbolizes a personalty around him that fits him but he does not like it so he's searching for it.

Another meaning is the person he is doesn't fit the corporate suit and he is trying to get away from the suit and tie life he wants expression,FREEDOM!!!!

Shut Those Cookies Up! The hours before the show started, there was a lot of hustling and bustling going on with the food making and the show prepping and the chair moving and the art tacking and the cookie showing. We had to prepare noodles, cake, brownies, cookies, lemonade, chicken, salad, lumpier, quiche, and the potatoe salad. Thao was at an orientation, so she wasn't helping us prep for the show. We covered tables with paper for the dinner and then there was some more things.

Written completely with no help from William Mark.

THE SHOW

Aye what's up this is Terry. We are getting ready for the show to day,I really hope it will good well and the art is looking great... i would really like to come back to
the MERIDIAN Art Gallery. Some hearing activities we have been doing are going to different locations and listening to our surrounding. Almost everyday we have 5 minutes of listening and of silence. We also make music out of regular household items. We have also learned how to draw contour and gesture drawings. Contour is a way of drawing something but just by outlining and a lot of detail like most artworks, but gesture drawings the opposite its more simple and does not have detail.
I have been working in the interns program for 3 weeks and its been really fun. I have learned more stuff about art and I have recognized that hearing is very important. I really do not listening to my surroundings but if you just take time to listen you will notice that there are many sounds. Today is my last day because I am going to Peru for a family emergency. I have really enjoyed being here and hopefully i will get a chance to participate in the fall.

7/16/10

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xbyxgOUTjRg/TEDvoDM8cOI/AAAAAAAAAGU/NuCL2ULu0Io/s400/_MG_0782.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494655016725410018" />
Hi, this is gabe zapata im an intern at the Meridian Gallery. My idea about it was that since we live in the city, we can try combining the sound of the city and nature together. So since we live in San Francisco, it is easy because there are a lot of cars, and cable cars going by, but for sounds from nature, we probably need speakers installed somewhere behind the plants, just to make it more realistic. For the sounds, there were a lot of people talking about it, and I heard some very good ideas. For example, the sound of animals, since we have drawings of animal in our garden. The sound should just be noises cause by winds and trees.

Recordings

We learned a few simple things about the Pro Tools program, I think that's what it was called. We learned about gain and how to not make the sound we want to hear crack from being too loud. We also learned about recording with the microphone and jacks for the microphone, one name for the jack was something XLR or XLR something. We then started recording simple sounds like cracking a bottle and making a scary scene using our voices, which I honestly don't think it was scary at all. Today in representation of Meridian Gallery I'll talk about influences in my art. When I was younger I watched a lot of cartoons, ranging from Batman the Animated Series to Sailor Moon to Pokemon. I think the main reason I started art was because I wanted to draw like the animated series I watched. Even to this day, my favorite thing to watch are cartoons, I find them fun to watch no matter who they're made for. I'll watch kids cartoons and adult cartoons both with joy because I appreciate all the work and effort into making the animation.

When I was younger I loved Japanese animation, I thought it was the greatest form of animation.

NOTE: These are artworks that are from my childhood, when I though anime was holy and it controlled every aspect of my art...

As I grew older though, I realized that a lot of the recent Anime is really lazy. The average frame rate of an animation is usually 30 frames per second, for Anime, it's 15 frames. While I understand because a lot of Anime has very detailed character illustrations, which is like an actual piece of art, but the animation itself can be sluggish. Anime tends to lean towards story and character driven plots, which gets cliche a lot. My favorite japanese animations would be ones directed by Satoshi Kon and Hayao Miyazaki. Satoshi Kon has a more realistic style, while Miyazaki has a more surreal one.

American animation varies. Recently there has been a lot of 3D animation to cut down production time and cost, but I think 2D animation is superior. That is why I like Disney's old movies so much. While simple, they are beautiful and have very fluid animation. This is because Disney himself hired professional artists to animate his first movies, providing top notch work. My favorite Disney film is Tarzan and Mulan.

Russian animation is something I have been getting into recently. Their animations are the most fluid I've seen so far. The Russian animation I've seen so far does what animation should do; it makes art come to life. It's the most fluid and natural I've seen so far. Disney looks like they have rigamortis compared to Russian animation. I can't say much for the story line though, since I can't understand a word they're saying.

Russian Winnie the Pooh, doesn't Pooh Bear look tough?

Animation was my greatest influence to persue art. Now, one of my greatest aspirations is to be an animator.

images courtesy of~
http://www.opensenses.com/discussion/batman-arkham-asylum
http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/c/cybersix.htm
http://yonihon.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/tokyo-godfathers/
http://ketaro.wordpress.com/2009/01/22/trilha-sonora-de-michiko-e-hatchim/
http://www.theotagal.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
http://www.adam-diggins.co.uk/oceana/gen_news_main.htm
http://www.linasia.com/bkup/mulan/mfan.html
http://www.tripletsandus.com/disney/art.htm
http://www.piano-spelen.nl/video/index.php?key=Film&page=4

Twisted San Francisco

Eco Art

Every year Meridian Interns makes a project to enter in the De Young at Art contest. This year, we decided to put our focus on eco and fiber art to create something beautiful from items that was no longer useful to people. Our instructors collected plastic bags and cut them up for us to knit. Everyone knitted something, whether it was big or small, all interns participated. Now, we are putting together a bird out of all the pieces of knitted plastic.
Eco art is a beautiful thing because you're putting an emphasis on how everything can be made into art. There are many eco artists due to the fact that everyone is aiming to go green. In Vietnam, you can find mini motorbikes, hats, and other things made out of recycles soda cans sold on the sidewalks, like this:

image found on: www.tenewyork.com/entertainers.php
Here is an image of a beautiful corset made out of satin and soda can pull tabs.

for more images check out:
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2009/01/tabistry_beer_and_soda_can_pulltab.html

But you can make art out of other things too, for example:

this dog was created from used toys that we usually throw out, more info on: http://aletorro.wordpress.com/2009/03/04/you-recycle-good-too-bad-most-of-it-goes-to-waste/

Eco art is not just another approach to art, but also a way to spread the message of recycling to viewers. This goes to show that anything can be made into art with a bit of effort and creativity.

By: Julia Ngo

Artist's block?

Artist block (noun) that horrible feeling when your mind is blank. When you feel that your brain is fried.

What should you do if you have a artist's block? You must have a time line so you can keep track of deadlines for future shows, submissions, etc. If you can't think of anything, then write in a journal, notebook or even a sketchbook, even if a means writing, "I can't think of anything at this moment," over and over again. This writing process will then help you gain ideas for your next step. After you have successfully done that, your creative circuit has re-fused and is now ready to be put to use. From here on out you have the basis to get started on your next big thing.

Image provided by http://www.notcot.org/page/64/

Artist's block has been brought to you by Bre'yanna M.

February 25, Thursday

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; What makes him unusual from other artist's is that, Olafur doesn't do what a lot of other artist's do, in art, architecture, and just the way he presents himself. For example,
(this IS a little thing, but it shows how much Olafur is different) on Olafur's official site, he writes first where he was born, what art school he went to, and what country(s) he lives in, what's so unusual about this is that most artist's would put down this long and quite frankly boring autobiography of where they were born, what they wore to school everyday (they didn't really), and then finally after all the boring tid-bits, we finally get to the part where they start to talk about their art( which we're about to do right now).

I first saw Olafur's work when his "Take your time" exhibit came to the San Francisco MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in 2007. It was probably one of the best exhibit's I have ever seen at SFMoMA. A lot of people have been saying that Olafur's work has really brought in this sort of scientific-modern approach to art. I have asked a few people who've seen Olafur's work and asked them what they thought about what they saw in his work, I asked Rye Purvis what she thought about Olafur's work and she told me "I thought it was refreshing and surreal, especially compared to the two-dimensional art work that a lot of people see in the art environment, I thought it was interesting how he meshed science and fine art". In conversation with a co-artist she told me that "While I found it enjoyable and refreshing, it relied on the concept of the spectacle much like a theme park and or a coster ride. In that sense I left the show with little to reconsider and no emotional transitions".
I asked my co-artist if she saw the Weather project at the Tate museum in London, and her response was "that was an amazing experience. What's different for me in this work, as compared to his show in San Francisco, is that it was a relational experience that also connected deeply to our daily experience as individuals in the "natural" world." So this now ends my bit on Olafur's work and I hope you enjoy.

Article by Myles Jones Mendoza

Exquisite Corpse

<img style="display:block;
